Massachusetts State House

Boston is a city rich in history with a culture all its own. A Yummy Walks tour is the perfect way to indulge in some of Boston's mouth-watering, traditional fare while seeing some of the most historic sites Boston has to offer. Come along and discover the Boston you might not know.

Adjacent to Boston Common along the Freedom Trail you will find the Massachusetts State House. The State House is the oldest building on Beacon Hill and one of the landmarks you will discover on your Foods of the Freedom Trail walking tour of one of Boston's most historic neighborhoods.

The Massachusetts State House was built in 1798. This was built to replace the Old State House which was built in 1713.The building is historically significant but also holds significance today as it is still the house of government for Massachusetts, housing the state legislature and the offices of the governor.

The State House was built on land that was owned by John Hancock, the first elected governor of Massachusetts. The land was originally used as a cow pasture by the Hancock family. The unique architecture of this Boston landmark is something to behold. The dome was originally built of wood but eventually became leaky. To fix this, Paul Revere's own company covered the dome in copper in 1802. Today you will see a dome that is gilded in 23K gold. You will also see a pinecone at the top of the dome. The story of the pinecone is just one piece of history you will discover when you visit the Massachusetts State House.

Walking the grounds of the State House you will discover many statues of famous people including Daniel Webster, Horace Mann, and JFK. The State House has at least 90,000 annual visitors. After your Yummy Walks tour of the Freedom Trail, consider returning to the State House for a special behind the scenes tour.
