Old City Hall

Old City Hall can be found along the famous Freedom Trail on the Foods of the Freedom Trail Yummy Walk. Your walking tour will introduce you to the culinary delights of traditional Boston fare while you learn about some of the most famous historic landmarks in Boston's North End neighborhood.

The Old City Hall was the second city hall to be built on this site. It was built in 1865 and was home to Boston's City Council from 1865 to 1969. Prior to that, the site was home of the very first public school in America, Boston Latin School. It was one of the first buildings in America to be built in the style of the French Second Empire. This started a trend across the country and is now one of only a few buildings left built in this style.

Situated on Salem Street between two famous historical landmarks, the Old South Meeting House and Kings Chapel, Old City Hall and its unique architecture can't be missed. In 1969, City Hall moved to another location and Old City Hall became famous for being a pioneer of adaptive reuse of old public buildings no longer in use. Today, the building is home to offices and popular restaurants. Because of this, the Old City Hall has lost some of its impressive interior but there is still much to see.

The inside entrances contain beautiful murals depicting the history of the building and the even older history of the site. Statues can be found in the courtyard including one of Benjamin Franklin who attended school at the first public school in America which occupied this site from 1704-1748. After your Boston walking tour you may want to return to this historic landmark to further explore its gorgeous architecture and maybe even try out one of the popular restaurants here. Although you may want to wait awhile, you most likely won't be hungry after tasting all of the culinary delights on your Yummy Walk tour.
