North Square

North Square is a section of the historic North End Neighborhood in Boston located at the intersection of Moon, Prince, North, Garden Court and Sun Court Streets. This one little slice of the North End neighborhood is steeped in the rich history of colonial America and beyond. North Square is just one of the historic gems you will be introduced to on the North End Little Italy Food tour. On your walking tour, taste the delights of the rich Italian heritage here while you learn about some of the most historical places in all of Boston.

North Square was actually known as Clark’s Square prior to July 4, 1788. The square was named for William Clark, a wealthy merchant who owned a magnificent 3 story brick home containing 23 grand rooms.

Another notable home in the North Square was the home of John Foster. This historic home faced the garden court and was later occupied by Governor Hutchinson, famous for contributing to the unrest that led to the Revolutionary War.

Occupying a less lavish home but of no less significance was the famous Paul Revere. His famous home is also located in North Square and is now a museum where you can see the home as it was when he lived here with his family, even including furniture that is believed to have been owned by the Revere family.

During the 17th century, the Old North Meeting House was a prominent building in North Square. The famous pastor, Increase Mather also lived here until his home was destroyed in The Great Fire of 1677.

During the 20th century this part of the neighborhood became home to many Italian immigrants and you will still see the signs of that today as you explore The North End on the Little Italy walking tour.
