Park Street Church

On the corner of Tremont and Park Streets along the Freedom Trail sits a church with a rich history dating back to 1810. Come along on the Foods of the Freedom Trail Walking tour and go behind the scenes of the rich culinary history of Boston while learning about famous historic landmarks such as Park Street church.

The Park Street Church was founded by a group of people largely made up of members of the Old South Meeting House. The church sits adjacent to the Old Granary Burial Ground and was built upon the site of the old Granary building where grain used to be stored. The location is also known as Brimstone Corner, whether this is a reference to the "fire and brimstone" preaching at the church or the fact that gun powder was stored in the basement is still up for debate.

The Puritan church had a conservative Christian congregation known for many "firsts". They were the pioneers of the first prison ministry and together with members of the Old South Church formed a City Mission Society which served Boston's urban poor population. The famous song "My Country 'tis of Thee" was first sung in the Park Street Church by the children's choir.

The steeple of the church is 217 feet high. For a long time it was the tallest landmark in Downtown Boston and was used a guide for travelers coming to the city. It can still be seen today from many Boston neighborhoods.

Today the church still practices a conservative Trinitarian theology and has an active congregation. After your walking tour of Boston feel free to visit the Park Street Church on your own to learn even more about its colorful history. Visitors are welcome to look around during open hours or by appointment and volunteers are usually on hand to answer any of your questions.
